The first two books were very good- but the character motivations in the third are contrived, convenient and not believable... I am gritting my teeth to get through it...

Well, they certainly set us up for a sequel, didn't they?

"Lakonia" was the name of the country surrounding (and controlled by) the city-state of Sparta in Ancient Greece. (It's why the Spartan warriors had a Lambda painted on their shields). I wonder if that is a coincidence, or if it is a signal of what may be coming. The titles of the other books have classical allusions, too.

Was travelling for work, followed by a dsy at home with a cold, do was able to finish it.

The book was probably my favorite as well. It genuinely surprised me all the way through. I had forgotten much of the set up of the Laconian Empire from the ealier books. If I had more time I would go back to find it in earlier books to try and get a sense for how dar in advance the authors were foreshadowing.

Anyway, definitely the Empire Strikes Back of The Expanse (literally and figuritively). Looking forward to seeing where the next 2 books take us.

damn, I'm only on chapter 3. It was a busy weekend though. I wasn't expecting the jump in time, so that was a little jarring to see the characters aged a bit. Will respond more when I get further along.
