(The vote is still a couple of hours away at time of writing, "have been" should be operative just after 7pm Pacific)

The Republican anti-immigrant extremists might back down on DACA, theoretically, but we know that'll never happen.

The Democrats, or at least ten or so, could throw the Dreamers under the bus and vote for the budget, avoiding the shutdown and all the pain you predict.

Rock and a hard place, morally. Maybe that's my answer to the question hank posed: Damned if we do, damned if we don't, and schadenfreude at the GOP's bottomless incompetence seems out of place. They're gonna hurt somebody, royally.

The hardships of going without a paycheck will be enormous for quite a few people that are- unlike congress- just trying to do their jobs... there is no guarantee that they will ever be paid their missing paychecks when government re-opens... the human toll will be huge.

I was one of the lucky few to be exempt from the last shutdown because my mission was en-route to the moon and I had to ensure the ground terminal was ready for the mission- I had to do major scrambling to get last minute arrangements settled with numerous government agencies before they were impacted by a shutdown.

I have multiple projects that will be delayed for however long this nonsense takes to be resolved-all of them have deadlines to meet that don't change just because congress can't get its act together. Next Friday I was supposed to fly out present some work at Photonics West in San Francisco...

Other projects will be dealt a serious schedule hit- launch windows don't give a damn about politics... my hardships are trivial compared to many others. The shutdown will cost the American taxpayer a lot- not just the loss of access to services, but the cost from the inefficiency of the shutdown and the resources that have to be expended to play catch-up after its over...

And then there are the hundreds of thousands of families that will not get a paycheck until this is over... how many landlords will be understanding about that? There is no guarantee they will EVER be paid those missing paychecks.

All because republicans hate hispanics...
