I don’t know how much media coverage the Parkland students are getting in the rest of the US, but here in Florida they are all over TV and the papers. And unlike the stereotypes of dumb, Facebook Millennial zombies, these kids are coming across as sharp, committed and passionate on this issue. Needless to say, they are already quite well-informed.
Their parents’ generation is not coming off as well. A big gun show just opened in Miami, and the participants are doing their best to avoid the TV cameras and microphones. The local GOP national champions (and campaign contribution recipients) for the NRA, Sen Rubio and Gov Scott, are doing their best to change the subject to screening gun purchases for the mentally unfit, but its just not working. They’ll talk to reporters in the studio, but they haven’t been coming off too well in front of their constituents.
Let’s face it, there is no consistent psychological or social profile for mass shooters, all they do have in common is easy access to military type firearms. The gun lobby, OTOH, is restricted to making absurd quibbling distinctions, like arguing about the actual dictionary definition of “assault rifle”. Since AR-15s and AK-47s legally sold in the state do not have a full automatic fire selector switch (easily installed by any gunsmith), they are technically, NOT “assault weapons”. Therefore, all the complaints of those ignorant, gun hating libs need not be listened to. They have no idea what they are talking about. We’ve seen that kind of sleazebag lawyer mentality at work right here on the Zone, folks. “Since there is no precise, completely agreed-upon dictionary definition for the crime, therefore no crime has occurred.”
Doublethink wordcrime. Doubleplus ungood.
