Even all his saber rattling about China, trade and tariffs seems to have suddenly quieted down with nobody even pointing it out. Trump is not only selling us down the river, he's violating his own trade principles to buy foreign cooperation. And they are happy to oblige him by temporarily delaying their own geopolitical ambitions in order to allow him to satisfy his base. Note how his new pals, the Chinese, continue to expand and fortify their own Asian Co-prosperity Sphere in the South China Sea. The GOP gave us plenty of warning when they simply refused to consider Obama's Supreme Court nominee (or any of numerous agency head and court appointees), when they institutionalized voter suppression and gerrymandering and when they accepted Trump's patently bogus medical report and income tax filing prior to the election. It was obvious by his firing of Comey and general attacks on the Intelligence Services and the press and when regulatory agencies were appointed leaders patently hostile to their mission--in short, anyone with a legitimate right to criticize or contradict him. And Trump knew what he was doing, didn't he tell us himself he could shoot someone in Times Square and get away with it? The stage is being set for a political environment where no matter what evidence or subpoenas Mueller presents will simply be ignored, anything he publishes will be buried and anyone he indicts will be pardoned. It may not even be necessary to fire the man, he will simply be dismissed as irrelevant. We're watching a <em>coup d'etat</em> in slow motion, and the only thing preventing it from wrapping up completely is their fear that they might move prematurely and lose their majority in Congress. If they can keep that majority come November, things will start getting much uglier much faster. By 2020 their consolidation of power will be complete and their opponents, if not actually purged and persecuted, will simply be too isolated and marginalized to be relevant. So far, the 21st Century has not been turning out too well for American Democracy. Just because it doesn't precisely parallel 1930s Germany doesn't mean what we're witnessing isn't a classic fascist takeover. Only the Reichstag fire (or some more appropriate American analogue of it) remains to be invoked. He'll fire Mueller and distract us with something like an indictment of Hillary--or military action in Asia.
