I feel for JMS, too. He's had a lot of single-season wonders, shows like Jericho that lacked only the faith of the damn suits to become classics. Let's all curse one more time the corporate entertainment complex, and raise one for Firefly.

"Caprica" must have suffered a similar fate. An intricately plotted , sophisticated and complex, but self-consistent, storyline was suddenly rushed to completion with a hastily cobbled together denouement.

One of my favorites, "Defying Gravity", got its plug pulled abruptly in the middle of the first season end episode...just before the creature hiding in the cargo hold was finally revealed.

Once again, we are reminded that no matter how creative the artistic and technical staff may be, the business majors will be able to find a way to fuck it up.

The Hollywood Reporter also mentioned that "The show's June 27 season finale will now serve as its series finale."

Oh man, remember when this happened to Babylon 5? JMS did an emergency rewrite to fit his five-year story arc into four after the last season was cancelled. Then when it was renewed, he had to come up with a years' worth of new stories. They were good, like all his work. But it wreaked havoc with a carefully-plotted story.

I think on all counts. Amazon sells stuff, and they'll happily sell discs of a show alongside the stream. You'll get yer DVDs.

I don't know why Those Idiots cancelled the show. I poked around google, and the Hollywood Reporter talks about declining audience numbers. I've worried about this in the past: Like thousands of other cord-cutters, I don't watch most shows within the "DVR window", the three days after broadcast when people who watch the show on DVRs get counted along with the premiere audience. I think I've contributed to serious undercounting of the show's audience.

In fact, I was going to wait for the show to come up free in Prime, in a few months. Then I heard about the cancellation, and decided to send Jeff a message, by spending $30 on Amazon to stream The Expanse.

Three days later he buys the show. Coincidence? Sure, why not?

We like to own our own copy and we prefer not to stream content on demand.

And why DID Syffy cancel? Could it be that like "Rome" on HBO, that in spite of critical and viewer success it was just too expensive to produce profitably?
