...we will irreversibly put ourselves on either the road to glory, or extinction in the next generation or two.

I suspect we have ALREADY set ourselves off on the path to the dead end.

It is hard to see how civilization as we know it will survive the crisis to come- with warming temperatures turning swaths of the planet into uninhabitable hell holes the coming refugee crises will make the current one look like nothing. Poorer populations will suffer for the excesses of the rich and will flood their borders in an effort to simply live.

The current refugee flux has already been used to whip up fascist fervor in the united states, and europe- fascists whip up fear and animus against people simply trying to live, and cajole their populace to turn inward with fear and contempt for the rest of the world...

And as we have seen here in America, people are all too willing to swallow that poison.

Now imagine the refugee flux increased by orders of magnitude- as it inevitably will- wars and genocide will rage and the 'civilized' nations of the world will exploit xenophobia to implement fascism.

We will enter a dark age, a terminal epoch delineating the end of the Anthropocene- there will be no light at the end of the tunnel. Some remnant of humanity will cling to survival in the long term- I am sure- but it will be a wretched existence.

I had hoped America would be a force holding back the tides of fascism, but instead we seem to be leading the charge into the abyss.

Unless a miracle occurs, in the next 30 years we will see death on a scale that defies comprehension and overwhelms compassion... and the 50 years following that will be a living hell.

Humanity will live in the shadow of what it once was, and that shadow will only get darker. The climate, the raw materials, the energy sources that fueled our meteoric rise will be squandered, and a rise from the ashes will not be feasible... just slowly darkening embers will remain in the coming long night , fighting the losing battle against the dying of the light.

On the bright side, though, at least we got a bunch on nice red hats out of it!
