And his Deplorables may be forgiven; simple, unsophisticated folk so desperate to believe they have found their saviour that they have managed to delude themselves that there is method to his madness and that the evil he may do is only unfortunate but necessary collateral damage; like the innocent civilians sacrificed unavoidably in the bombardment of a terrorist stronghold. Even those who know exactly what is going on, who are perfectly aware of his motives and his methods, but support him anyway out of fear of reprisals can be forgiven. Theirs is the sin of cowardice, and who are we to condemn those who are truly afraid when we have not faced that fear ourselves? The ones who can never be forgiven are those who know the truth but said nothing. Who understood perfectly but had too much to lose by speaking out, and too much to gain collaborating in the crimes and the lies themselves. I understand what happened in Germany in the 1930s now. I am shamed it could happen in my country, too. And I understand how easily it can happen anywhere, any time. It isn't because so many people had to be evil, its because it took so few.
