Should we impeach Trump, or not? There are very good reasons not to.

First of all, its not going to work. No matter how compelling a case the House comes up with, there is no way the Senate will come up with the votes to convict. Trump cannot be removed by impeachment.

Second, without a conviction, Trump and his allies will only be emboldened, his enemies will be demoralized and scattered, and the vast, apathetic middle will only become more so. The nation’s business will grind to a halt and partisan paralysis will set in. With nothing more to fear from the opposition, the forces on the Right will initiate a campaign of vengeance against their enemies and their programs will be railroaded through, no matter how outrageous or unconstitutional. The failure of an impeachment to secure a conviction will be the signal for them that anything goes and their opposition is powerless.

Third, we will run the risk that the nation will tire of the debate, Resistance Fatigue will set in, and Trump will be assured a second term, or perhaps even a third! Besides, even if we do succeed in removing Trump, we will only succeed in replacing him with someone just like him like Pence, his policies will remain intact and will be championed by someone else, someone just as bad, but much more competent. And the Donald will be made a martyr, another victim of the Liberal Elites, the Deep State, the Fake News Media.

The only way to cure this disease is to let it run its course. Vote the rascals out after they have thoroughly discredited themselves. Otherwise, they will always claim they were cheated, betrayed, “stabbed in the back”. You know the drill. Any disasters brought on by his policies will only be blamed on the Democrats.

This is all true, but I am starting to have second thoughts, nonetheless. If the fascist coup is allowed to run successfully to its eventual conclusion without even a token resistance, then are we all not just as guilty? The forces of freedom and democracy must fight back, even if it is only a futile struggle, a doomed and pointless last stand. The nation is threatened, and if we refuse to undertake the peaceful and legal defense of it we are entitled to, are we not just collaborating with the forces of evil? We are actively aiding them unless we resist. That was Germany’s shame, shall America meekly follow her example in history? Czechoslovakia could probably have not defeated the Wehrmacht, but it had a strong military, a fortified border and solid defenses, if it had resisted the Nazis even a defeat would have weakened Hitler, perhaps even crippled him, and it would have saved Poland by discouraging further aggression. Instead, the Nazis just marched in without firing a shot. Total global war was inevitable.

I’ve changed my position on this debate. We have to at least go through the motions of trying to impeach Donald Trump or we will go down in history as yielding to him without a fight. We will be cowards, and history will never forgive us. We will be the generation that didn’t do anything.
