The only alternative is that they are evil. Years, or decades, from now, when the Trump legacy has been finally expunged from American politics, Conservatives will be bringing him up as an example of what the Liberals' sins and shortcomings are, just as today they point to Richard Nixon, J Edgar Hoover and Joe McCarthy when they want to slander the Left. But you will note that during the those eras, they backed those guys up up all the way, just as today you don't hear a peep out of them no matter what outrage the Trump gang is trying to pull off. I'm not saying all Conservative policies are self-serving and corrupt. And I'm not saying that all Liberal policies are selfless and virtuous. What I am saying is that those who have taken over the Conservative movement today, those who champion and promote traditional Conservative policies, ARE both self-serving AND corrupt. If there are any honest ones they have either been driven off or silenced. When Conservatives DO complain or question Trumpian antics they always express reservations because they applaud all the "progress he's made", or all the "things he's accomplished" on their agenda. Homework assignment: Look up "Faustian Bargain". but his followers, enablers and sycophants can’t all be.
