Don't worry, ER, I'm a packrat, and I have multiple copies of the message databases from all the incarnations of the Zone back to July 2001. What's online right now is just what's stored in the WordPress Resurrection, since 2011.

The first Zone didn't actually use a database, just hundreds of thousands of message files. Couple of years ago I got far enough along in a test of bringing back that era, that I had a working site displaying discussion threads and all.

That experiment gave me a powerful inspiration. The HabitableZone is more than a discussion forum, it's the daily journal of a bunch of people trying to make sense of the world around them.

I remember reading September 10, 2001. It was so normal, so calm. Then I turned the page, and we were all screaming in terror. Me included. I read my thoughts as I wrote them in real time. None of us understood what was going on--was it the start of the end of the world? There have been many days like that in the life of the Zone, and many days filled with routine daily life.

So here's my latest thinking about what to do with the Zone, as my final project in retirement. I'll put the old messages back online, not as a discussion forum, but as a journal. Something that's meant to be read, sometimes a pleasurable read, sometimes horrifying. But so, so real.

I still intend to put a new HZ discussion site up, the totally modern WordPress thing I'm working on now. But I think I'll do away with the hardwired forum design in favor of a fluid tag-based design, that lets the site evolve with the interests of its members.

The Zone database got constipated this morning, bringing down the site. I purged a bunch of log files and it's back now. But it was an impetus for starting to share my plans with you guys. I think of you stubborn few as my board of directors, and I want to work out a long term plan to keep the Zone, historical and current, going after me. I just retired, time to think about stuff like that.

I have a copy of the database of The Zone That Was (Classic Period). But, at present, I do not have a convenient program to access it. I do not have anything from the ruins of the HZ TikiWiki.

However, there are fossil remains on the Wayback:
