One particularly disturbing observation made by Wallace (and he comes across as an exceptionally perceptive man) is that he felt that there were only &quot;several million&quot; fascists in the USA in 1944.

Today, they seem to number (depending on how you define the term &quot;fascist&quot;) between a quarter and a third of the American adult population.

Thanks for posting this, RL.  It perfectly illustrates that although social and political conditions may change dramatically over time, and from place to place, the human motives and forces operating in the background remain pretty much the same all over and all the time. 

They are obvious to those who are able to learn from history.</description>
