Kurds pelt departing US troops with rotten vegetables October 21, 2019 12:40 pm ER

Remember that humiliating episode in “The Sand Pebbles”? The US Navy shore party, surrounded and outnumbered by local warlords, is forced to meekly withdraw at gunpoint and under escort, (with their own weapons at ‘Sling Arms’). As they march back in disgrace to their ship, they are insulted (with rotten fruit and vegetables) by the populace they had been sent there to defend. Thankfully, only the last few minutes of that shameful encounter are on Youtube. But I remember the entire scene from when I saw the movie right after it came out. I felt the same way then as I do now.

The stupid and cruel policies that led to this can be excused as the result of a stupid and cruel American President. But those in his party that continue to support him and those policies simply because of their own short-term financial interests and ideological hubris can never, ever be forgiven. They can’t claim the same excuses Trump has. But they have the audacity to take credit for it the same way he has.
