tsk tsk, RL, you know how I am when I see scary subject lines. But all's relatively well, so I'll pop a nitroglycerin tablet under my tongue, and I'll soon be well too.

So very sorry for your loss. I hope it wasn't suffering. And if it was, you can see this as a blessing. Be comforted that 15 is a good long life for a computer, one that all motherboards hope for.

Rumors of my computer's death have been somewhat exaggerated...but...

after multiple attempts, I was able to bring it back to life this afternoon. I have no idea just how I did it, or what I did to correct it, so I can't guarantee I'll be back up again tomorrow.

It started working again after I swapped out monitors with my old offline machine I use as a backup. I doubt that's what actually solved the problem (I've been having periods of failure to boot, and unexpected blue screens on and off now for about a year, but none lasted as long as this time. The monitor is working fine on my old computer, and my old monitor is working fine on this one, so I have reached an empirical solution to my problem, even if not a fundamental or decisive one. So I will continue as before, but don't be surprised if I disappear again sometime in the near future. Like tomorrow.

Mme Reclus is going in for knee surgery in about a month, and the end of the year is the time when all my heavy bills come (house, auto and life insurance, auto maintenance, property taxes, home owner's association dues etc, so replacing the computer will probably have to wait until spring. Actually, I was really looking forward to going cold turkey for a while, but as long as I'm up and running I'd be crazy not to proceed as before. You know, its like being a couple of days into quitting smoking and suddenly finding an unopened deck of Luckies in your trench coat pocket.
