My personal favorites are "Have Space Suit - Will Travel" (1958), "Starship Troopers" (1959) and "Podkayne of Mars" (1963).

Since I read that? I think it was the first Heinlein novel I read. It's still on the shelf, though.

I like the portions that are the Excerpts from the notebooks of Lazarus Long. Some good stuff there, Heinlein's philosophy distilled into shot glasses. I don't agree with all of them, especially as I get older, but some I quote regularly.

"Specialization is for insects" is a favorite to this day.

Otherwise...

Typical Heinlein protagonist. Wait, maybe the penultimate Heinlein protagonist. Appears in so many of his books with different names. The "Old Man" archetype, wise, cunning, two or three steps ahead, beloved by men and women alike, all scantily clothed. Money is no problem and outwitting the politicians is a game.

Lazarus is the same character as Jubal in Stranger, which I like, and have read a couple of times, most recently the unabridged version, which adds 60,000 words. It's the most Heinlein novel in his collection.

You're not the only one who didn't like "Stranger". Phil once said it was the beginning of Heinlein's "weird period" .
I enjoy metaphysical books by authors like Carlos Castaneda and Richard Bach. Always fun to think beyond the reality of physics, to look at the perceptions of reality verses the absolute truth. I still remember the ending of stranger. Exactly what would happen in real life.
I like some of his short stories such as "The Roads Must Roll" and the one with the dying astronaut on the moon.
30 pages in with Time Enough. My gawd, such a slow grind developing the character of a 2000 year old son of a bitch. Could have been done in 3. Starting to get a little more interesting.

Is it any good?

I really enjoyed his juvenile space adventures--when I was a juvenile. And his short stories were very good. "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel",
"Citizen of the Galaxy" and "Starship Trooper" were great reads, if you could get past the propaganda. Even if you couldn't swallow Heinlein's politics, he did bring up a lot of good points and he made you think, he was a great storyteller, wrote effortless prose and his science was excellent. But "Stranger in a Strange Land" was a disappointment to me in spite of its success with the hippie-dippie crowd. The books that followed were a real embarrassment. I couldn't finish even one of them, and I soon gave up on him. Either I outgrew him, or RAH had collapsed into senility and near dementia. Even worse, his sexual attitudes and his view of women bordered on the creepy.

It's sad, Heinlein was one of my childhood heroes, but towards the end of his career he just broke my heart.
