As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged, and it is in such a twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air – however slight – lest we become unwitting victims of darkness.
-William O. Douglas
Twilight is fading, and the witching hour quickly approaches. Those that helped bring about the darkness are the ones that will take the most comfort from it… For in the darkness they will not be able to see what they have done.
Only their conscience could trouble them, but they put that to bed early…and smothered it with a pillow.
Occasional brief sparks of decency will cast a harsh light on their sins of omission and commission… and those sparks will be beaten down violently for the pain they cause those that find comfort in the darkness.
Because the chasm between what they used to be, and what they allowed themselves to become… with the knowledge that there is no path that can lead them back… that is a pain they will kill to avoid.
And THAT is how fascists are able to do what they once found unthinkable.
