In these times we should be concerned about everyone. This virus is killing 3 times as many African Americans than anyone else. Probably due to genetic sickle cell trait which makes the group more susceptible to high blood pressure and type 2 Diabetes. Since Covid-19 attacks blood cells, it's likely this is the reason.

I know kids that have been infected and while they don't have pneumonia or are in danger, their infections have lasted 6 weeks. That's not normal and it's not good. Young immune systems should be able to shake a flu off fast.

Also South Korea's "cured" patients showing it flare up again when tested is more "not good".

Safe, like everything is relative.

But sure, here in the midst of a bio-terror attack I'm safe.
It depends on what monstrosity is released next and what counter action we have taken/are taking.

Stay positive. That's the ultimate inoculation.

I've avoided Facebook, Twitter, et al, for their social fragmentation and trivialization, and I-told-you-so about their untrustworthiness. But I'd expect that now is their moment to shine--I may have to ask my niece what's going on.

It could be that the older text-centric social networks are being eclipsed by video chat. Every day I read some how-to-stay-at-home piece about Zoom or another video chat service being used by everybody from families to sex parties; and that grandparents are somehow able to make it work. That latter point's essential: my 92-year old father is struggling to master text messaging on a new smartphone, but I hope to guide him to video eventually.

The Zone does still have a place, I like to think, but its text-only model is even more likely to be made obsolete by video. With email in decline too in favor of bumper-sticker messaging, I'd say that long-form text has probably become an anachronism.

Still, I'll keep it going as long as I can. Thanks for all your help over the years, podrock.

Sorry to hear it, Buck. Believe it or not, from what I've read, she has what's considered a moderate case of covid-19; respiratory distress is what promotes it to severe. Or, come to think of it, since covid is a sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) disease, she might not have it. Not that she shouldn't assume the worst to stay safer.

Absent respiratory problems requiring hospitalization, we're expected to soldier through like a bad cold or the flu. I suspect that if her local healthcare system weren't stressed and hunkered down, they'd be able to give her medicine to at least make her more comfortable. But this is America, and we're on our own now.

Not confirmed because she can't get a test, but all but certain. She went to bed about a week ago feeling great. She woke soaked and lying in a puddle of sweat, with a massive headache and aches in all of her joints. She said she has never felt worse in her life and could not even get out of bed. She's been coughing to the point it is painful. Her fiance has been taking care of her and has been in constant contact with her doctors. They said if she starts having trouble breathing to bring her in immediately, otherwise just monitor her condition and self quarantine. Her fiance is not sick but is likely asymptomatic. They went to Hawaii a few weeks ago and a week after they got back it hit her. Hard. I get daily updates from her. She says it's very bad but she getting slightly better.

I thought it was irresponsible for them to go when I saw the pics they shared of them on the plane on the way to Hawaii. Look at what fricken happened. I cancelled a trip I was planning to So Cal around the same time. I'm very glad now I did.

Btw, here is someone who most certainly has the coronavirus, but is not counted in the stats because there are no test available for her unless she goes to the hospital.
