A month or so ago, Mrs. P's Surface was doing the BSOD routine on a regular basis. Would take a couple of reboots to get it going again. Then, it is fine. Don't even remember what I did 'cause I did so many things. Disk scans, driver updates, defrags, yadda.

Yeah, wipe my "official" folders. Whatever. Clear up some drive space. Like you, I'm old school when it comes to data folders.

I recently got a BSOD after running the Dell device driver updater, and I wonder, now, if it was related to this bug?

The update has already been installed on my computer, and after I rebooted from the BSOD, things seemed normal. I considered uninstalling it, but that carries its own risks, so I'm going to wait and watch, for now.

According to the description of the damage, it nukes files stored in the "official" folders the Microsoft Politburo has mandated you're supposed to use, like Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc. I don't use those--I'm too old a dog to give up my personally idiosyncratic folder tree, one I've been using for at least a couple of decades now. It suits me, and now it appears my stubbornness will be rewarded. Yay.

To be fair, it's rare for Microsoft to screw up this bigly, any more. Not like the pioneering days of the 80s and 90s. I expect Microsoft will soon acknowledge the problem, and push a fix out the usual update channels.

But now that I know about, part of me will be wary of my PC, waiting for it to betray me when I least expect it. The fun never ends.

Thanks, podrock, for watching our backs.
