Near midnight. That police helicopter is still orbiting the Capitol and downtown. There are reports of looting at the downtown Macy's. The crowds are roving, as the cops push them out of one area they move to another. Police are using rubber bullets now.

I can't predict when it will end. Or how.

It's sunset now, and I can hear the CHP helicopter still orbiting the Capitol. Sirens earlier. The protests began this morning and are still going on. The local TV stations seem to be trying to ignore it all, but the Sacramento Bee newspaper has some text and video (simple paywall, you know the drill). Lots of angry faces and yelling, people facing off with lines of cops. Reports of broken windows, and anti-police graffiti on state buildings.

Only one arrest reported, and most violence reported has come from the cops (mostly CHP) using pepper spray, teargas, and flashbangs. Protesters have returned fire with water bottles, which strikes me as strangely compassionate toward cops that have been standing in the sun all day in black uniforms. In contrast, the last few major demonstrations have involved rightwing extremists, aggressive and violent, and lots of arrests (32 at one).

Sacramento's a political town, strongly liberal, and people know how to protest, how to walk the fine line. The cops generally seem to know the score, and I suspect they see their role as necessary targets for rage about police brutality in another city. Not that Sacramento's hands are clean in that regard, but our protests, at least, tend to be nonviolent.

More if the protests continue into the night.

organized commie and antifa cells that quickly mobilized and came here from all over the country, because OUR nigras are peaceful and non-violent and have no reason to cause trouble. They're not upset about anything, and its only these outside troublemakers that are making a mountain out of a molehill. I first heard that when I was peripherally involved (strictly as a spectator) in the Freedom March movement in the Florida Panhandle in the mid 1960s.

Now there ARE vandals and looters that take advantage of the unrest and chaos to cause trouble and steal. No one denies that. But they are not sinister organized political provocateurs as the authorities would have us believe. They are just plain, common, ordinary, all-American thugs. They aren't fomenting revolution, they're just stealing merchandise.

The National Guard has been released in Minneapolis to do the job that the Democrat Mayor couldn’t do. Should have been used 2 days ago & there would not have been damage & Police Headquarters would not have been taken over & ruined. Great job by the National Guard. No games!

Things seem to have cooled off in Miami, probably due to the implementation of the curfew at 2200. All in all, the protest seemed to have been pretty peaceful, what damage and arrests occurred seem to come just about the time it was winding up. It was very difficult to make sense of what was going on from the live TV coverage, but I guess by tomorrow the press will have it all sorted out.

My own county, Broward, just N of Miami-Dade, seems to be pretty quiet, although they have put on a curfew effective at 2300.

Good night from your S Fla reporter...

...In Minneapolis
It is a lie crafted to give the police license to do whatever they want to the protesters... Because the protesters are "outsiders" and not simply outraged citizens that cant remain silent as police murder other citizens.
