Literally just noticed this post.

My college has both a Makerlab, and a 3D Printing club. If you have the specs for the busted part (or the part itself), send them to me, and I can mail you back a replacement piece.

I have a filament based 3d printer that can do surprisingly nice work, and Getting a SLA resin 3d printer that has 50 micron precision...

I am working on making a respirator mask of my own design that I hope will be orders of magnitude better than a cloth mask

It will use some cloth for filtration, but adds a layer of PM 2.5 filter and a HEPA CPAP machine filter...

https://www.teawea.com/hp-28s-battery-compartment-door/

or google

"hp 28s battery cover"

Obviously someone is working on the problem, but they are still in the early stages. This calculator still has lots of fans. I've seen used ones going for more than we paid for ours in 1987.

I know nothing about that world,

If you could follow up on that for me I would appreciate it.

The HP-28s first came out in the late '80s, and the battery compartment lid was always a weak point in the mechanical design. No doubt a lot of people are looking for replacements. The problem is it has plastic AND mental components. Without it, a mighty fine and highly popular RPL
programmable graphics calculator is useless, so there's a good chance people are already making after-market replacements.

If you have the dimensions, you can draft up a replacement in graphic design software, and send it to a local 3d place, or pay them to do it entirely. If there aren't any close to you, I could consult with the 3D Printer Club at my college on the matter.

My ancient HP-28s is still working fine (it is my favorite calculator of all time), optimizing functionality and ease of use, but I fear its days are numbered. The battery port lid is cracked and spring loaded, and I fear it will not survive the next battery replacement. A piece of duct tape will not do, The port lid is an oddly shaped piece of plastic and it contains some conducting buses as well, so I can't replace it or jury-rig a kluge and I don't have the mechanical skills to make a new one. If anyone knows where I can find a replacement battery port lid I would be most grateful!

The HP28 series was the logical precursor to the HP 48s, which are highly backwards-compatible, so all the software I've written for the former runs great on the latter. Reverse Polish LISP rules!

Having researched this quite a bit over the last few weeks, I am finding myself in awe of the quality and innovation of the hp company, and the clever and dedicated engineers who worked there. But that was then, this is now. The business majors run the world now.

They are bringing in premium prices on the used and hobbyist markets. Unfortunately, since we already had the upgrade, we never bothered with reconstituting the hulk. The batteries were left in it and corroded inside, making a mess, and we didn't realize at the time there are now work-arounds to that problem.

But you are definitely welcome to the manuals. Have Podrock send me your address and I'll mail them to you.
