I don’t think there’s any question Trump may refuse to step down from the Presidency if the November elections don’t go his way. His very response to this question in this interview is obviously a testing of the waters to see how much potential opposition he can expect. The absence of outrage and astonishment on the Right tells us all we need to know. No one can predict the future, but this is not Al Gore or 2000 we’re talking about here.
The key question here is not what Trump will do, but what the government will do if he does decide to ignore the election. Will US Marshals come to the door of the White House and ceremoniously and respectfully perp-walk him out, or will the Justice Department do nothing, and the Senate back it up?
Its really all up to Barr and McConnell, and they both have a lot to lose if the country votes for Biden, especially if the Senate goes Democratic in the down-ballot. No matter how the vote goes, the Senators keep their seats until January, right? And by that time, its not inconceivable another Trump appointee will be on the Supreme Court. Votes in Congress will not change anything, the House may vote against Trump, but there’s no doubt the Senate will simply reprise its Impeachment roll call of a few months back.
Other, more elaborate scenarios have been proposed, including lawsuits, Supreme Court votes, debates, and other maneuvers to delay the decision well into 2021, but if he chooses to not go its simply up to him. He can just say “Hell no, the election is fixed, I’m not going.” And no one has the authority to order Law Enforcement to evict him except the Attorney General. Is there any doubt what Barr will do? And remember, the Senate and probably SCOTUS will back him up. I’m sure McConnell will not repeat his reluctance to appoint a replacement Justice just a few months before a Presidential election. This won’t be Obama’s nominee, it will be Trump’s.
The rules are different for the Grand Old Party.
Of course, there might be a Republican revolt in Congress demanding the election results be honored. Yeah, right. I would have said that myself just a few months ago; but a lot has happened since then. No, I don’t think that’s very likely either, not after the GOP courage displayed during the Impeachment. Any Republicans who secretly disagree with overturning the election will just look the other way, light up a cigarette, fidget with their neckties, re-lace their shoes, or whistle Dixie. They’ll know what’s good for them, and the Democrats will learn the same soon enough.
The election is still over three months away. A lot can happen between now and then. Covid could get REALLY ugly. There may be food or race riots in our cities, or both, an aircraft carrier could be ablaze in the South China Sea, North Korea could be testing a nuke in mid-Pacific or Russian tanks could be rolling into the Baltic States. And of course, the North Polar Cap is still melting away before our very eyes.
We live in interesting times.
