Writings a good way to blow steam in this regard - either lay down the basics for a better world (not perfect - never perfect, or for digging this one out of whatever mess it's in. If you can't be bothered, then dropping your self into someone else's via picking up their work is a great outlet too. As far as shared fantasias go, Orion's Arm is the way to go. Building off someone else's elements as they build off your own adds a certain layer of reality to the work. Alternatively, you could just find an RPG (either electronic or analog), and plug in that way. Steam's got some pretty great deals right now, and apparently e-dungeon crawls/shadowruns are a thing. Keto is one of those diet fads that's popped up in the last few years; I trust it as much as the Paleo diet, the Atkins diet, or any fad "diet" in general. You want a diet? Eat good food and exercise more - that's my take on it.

Maybe it is being deliberately cultivated and propagated, for commercial, military or political purposes.

Maybe this is the singularity. Its not hardware or software, those are just the matrix, the substrate where it lives. Maybe it is a self-reproducing form of data. The term “virus” may be a lot more accurate than we realize.
