However, if you get the pfizer vaccine first dose, you can't switch to Moderna for the second dose.

This is the first use of this technology (mRNA) for approved vaccines, and one good thing about this pandemic is that it may accelerate the adoption of this promising technology... there is research into using this technology to make cancer vaccines!

That is, is there a difference between the two jabs, or do you just get another poke of the same stuff?

I also plan to get the vaccine as soon as its available for me and the old lady. We're both over 70 and over weight, and I'm diabetic to boot, so we'll be getting it as soon as possible. If for any reason it doesn't work out, we'll be in a good position to take the alternate treatment.

Then we can go back to hanging out at rock concerts and bars and fascist rallies.

I plan to get the vaccine as soon as its available to me- which I do not expect to be soon- I am fortunately not in a particularly high risk group. It will likely be several months into 2021 (at the earliest) before it will be available to me- I would like it sooner of course, but I should only get it after the first responders, and folks in higher risk groups have gotten it- I will breathe a huge sigh of relief once my mother and uncles have been immunized.

Apparently the immune reaction to the second dose of the pfizer vaccine can be pretty hefty- some people get fevers approaching 104 degrees for a short period, however that is apparently a GOOD sign- that your body is mounting a strong response.

From what little I have seen the first dose gives you ~53% protection, and the second dose takes it to ~%95.
