The Storming of the Bastille? February 12, 2021 6:27 pm ER

The assault on the Winter Palace? The Gunpowder Plot? The Reichstag Fire?

No, I think it all just got out of hand. Trump has been lighting a fire under his Deplorables’ collective ass since before the 2016 election, just so they’d be ready for something like this, but I think it was successful beyond his wildest dreams. I don’t think he really expected the Capitol to be sacked, just a noisy demonstration and some broken windows and a few bashed heads. The Dems are trying to hang a full-scale revolution on him, but I think he never had that in mind. My guess is he’d expected a delay in the vote count, and maybe a little publicity. But he got a lot more than he bargained for.

How do I know this? Well, even though successful beyond his wildest dreams, he really didn’t have a plan in place to exploit the eventual confusion after the assault. The Trumpster just wasn’t ready to move decisively after it was all over, instead he had no follow-up in place, no second step, no post-coup plan. Sure, the Democrats are right to impeach him, to expose his Kraven Kongressional Kolleagues and his camo-clad, potbellied, mountain-man-bearded MAGA minions as the bloodthirsty trailer-trash inbred banjo-plucking albino peckerhead fascists they are; but if he was trying for a revolution, he just missed his chance. Instead he gave his hand away, and the Democrats will always be able to throw this farce at the Republicans, even if (as I suspect) Trump is acquitted. And except for a handful of really ballsy conservatives, the bulk of the GOP will be exposed as the cynical hypocrites they have become, but they will get re-elected right on schedule.

No, we’re not out of the woods yet, between a quarter and a third of the American electorate is still behind Donald, fondly fascisti, but Trump is too old and too discredited to be a threat for the immediate future. Still, he will have plenty of Cruzes, Grahams and others jockeying for leadership of the Redneck Right, the fundowackos and the plutocratic piggies they serve. Not to mention, I doubt the Dems will ever get their shit together to mount a coherent political defense against them. They’re too busy fighting carbon, feeling guilty about the “people of color” and protecting the gays. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favor of that, but we just missed getting one Hitler, all the conditions are still in place for his replacement and there’s no shortage of understudies waiting in the wings.

Damn, I’m glad I’m old.
