		<description>The last time they walked among us we were still excited about the infamous Janet Jackson Superbowl &#039;wardrobe malfunction&#039;. George W. Bush was president. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were just a few years old. The first season of &#039;The Apprentice&#039; had just begun, and the nation had no inkling of the horrors it would unleash on us. When they last saw the light of day, THIS was a &#039;smartphone:
&lt;img src=&quot;https://m-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/143681-940/Great-smartphones-from-10-years-ago-02-BlackBerry-7730--7750--7780.webp&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; width=&quot;600&quot;/&gt;

Twitter would be born 2 years after they last visited us...and atmospheric concentration of CO2 was only ~370ppm.

For 17 years they have slumbered, beneath our feet, sipping slowly on the roots of trees as we frantically went about our lives.

They have now awoken in their hundreds of billions to find a very different world, a more tense world, a hotter world... they will spend a few weeks taking it all in, and then, in unison, they will scream at us day and night.

And when they have had their say, their children will return to their roots to slumber another 17 years, hopefully to awaken in a better world.

Let&#039;s try not to disappoint them again...
