I strongly suggest that everyone here visit the comments section of any COVID story on a red-state news station... The delusional conspiracies these people have swallowed are absolutely insane... We are living in a country where a large loud and violent portion of the electorate lives in a dark and insane fever-dream. COMPLETELY divorced from reality. They are incoherent with generalized mass-marketed rage. News stories about dying people urging others to get the vaccine are met with laughter and insults directed at the dead, or accusations that they are simply crisis actors.... A story about a child that died of covid was swamped with conservatives laughing at how fat the child was... When Trump came along these people proudly adopted the label of 'deplorable' - and my god how they embraced it. We are living in a country where at LEAST %30 of the population revels in cruelty and ignorance. They do not care if the people they vote in lower their quality of life- what they care about is that the people they vote in inflict greater suffering on others. That is all it takes for these people to feel like 'winners'. They are distilled evil, all pretense of civility stripped away, no fillers or additives... just pure 200-proof evil. They are a minority, but I do not see how our democracy can survive them. The next 3 years will determine if we can at least hold them at bay... and so far we are losing. When they take over it will be all over- there won't be a 'next election' where we can stop them. There are many paths I can see for the future of our country and the world, and all of them are very dark, and filled with bloodshed on a scale that is impossible to really grasp. I don't consider myself a pessimistic person, but I am fairly confident that I will live to see the fall of civilization... really the only question in my mind is if isolated pockets will remain here and there... I strongly suspect that in 30-40 years the human population will be a rather small fraction of what it is now. And there will be no phoenix rising from humanity's ashes. We had one shot at this, and the stupidity of a minority doomed us. The scale of this tragedy is beyond my ability to truly grasp. And part of me knows that it is all likely to happen far sooner and be far more bloody than I think. If someone has a convincing argument that says I am overly pessimistic and wrong, I would genuinely love to be contradicted on this... Madness…
