Thanks Podrock (nearly put j** then), that makes it clearer. I’d say the situation is much the same in the UK right now, though from what I know of politics here in the Bush and Reagan administrations was that it was more other ministers who were open to discussion and compromise rather than the somewhat determined prime minister.

Politically NZ is in a interesting place now as there is less discussion and compromise and an air of rigid control that has not really been as such before, but I digress.

I agree, some examples would be helpful. But the basic idea is that these men, who I often disagreed with on policy, were willing to discuss and compromise to get things done for the country. Right now, we have a party that refuses to pass anything if it is proposed by the other party, even if they might agree with it. It is done out of spite. They have even said as much publicly. They'd rather burn the house down than paint it, so long as they can blame the other side to gain power.

‘An entire generation of Republican statesmen — men including Powell, George H.W. Bush, George Shultz, Brent Scowcroft and John McCain — regularly put the country’s interests above those of their own party.’

As I’m not American I’m not aware of occasions when they did this, it’s a shame the article didn’t give examples.
