Pretty good actually. A must for Dune fans.

I get Max 6 months out of the year. Every Black Friday I buy their 6 month offer for $3/month. $18 for six months is quite a good deal.

<p>Watched it twice now. </p>

First time with Mrs. P, so there was a fair amount of pausing to explain things. But it is a hard story to cram exposition into that bit before the opening credits.

Second time by myself, full through run.

I liked it, thought the visuals were spot on, characters faithfully realized, atmosphere appropriate...

But, somehow, it didn't stick in my head. I didn't care. Mrs. P. certainly didn't care. The story did not engage her.

I look forward to part two, though. There is the opportunity to go totally off the weird end with the spice and the water of life.

Back in High School, I did some theater. Had a great director. He'd sit in the back and tell us to enunciate! That we had to project more if the blocking had our back to the audience. He'd tell us about the Greek actors with pebbles in their mouths on the seashore practicing their lines. I'd be hoarse at the end of a night but that is how it is done.

I've been to a couple of shows that my brother's kids have been in for their high school. They all have those small wrap microphones now. They don't think about projection or enunciation at all. Broadway too.

Time changes, I guess.

And don't get me started on &*$%# autotune.

I know age is affecting my (and my wife's) hearing..

But I've long suspected there was more to it than that.
Besides unintelligible dialogue, wild variation in levels, particularly from scene-to-scene and between dialogue, music and sound-effect sequences convinced me more was at work.

Part of it is that we watch almost all our movies on video disc, and that the degree of sound tweaking the technology now allows on our equipment far exceeds our understanding of how to control it. (Why should I have to navigate four nested levels of menus to boost the treble a bit? That's not my job.) I still do not know what Surround, Dolby or any of that shit means, much less what it does. I realize modulating sound is as complex and subtle as modulating imagery, but I understand optics and image processing as a professional, I was trained that way. All I know about
sound is volume, woofer and tweeter, and that's all I ever want to know.

Many years ago I noticed something else. The British dramas I like to watch on PBS have awful sound, particularly when dialogue is involved. And I refuse to believe only Americans are good sound engineers. I know all Brits sound like they have a mouthful of haggis, regardless of which regional or class accent they are so expertly delivering, but I soon realized there was more of a technical issue involved. I suspect their recording, playback and mixing gear may not be fully compatible with ours, although they seem to do a great job with musical recording.

Incidentally, I suspect the season 5 of the Expanse is a cheap bootleg Chinese knock-off. The video quality is good, with one exception, I believe its been compressed so that the color space is truncated, that is, the contrast has been squeezed (the data has been forced into fewer histogram bins) almost to the point where you can see density slicing.

But at least, the sound quality is good.

If it's intentional or laziness, that's Bullshit.

When I had a home theater sound system I learned the dialogue is played in the center channel. A bit of tweaking helped.

Getting tired of voicing the phrase "what did they say?". Starting to consider hearing aids.

I've taken to always using closed captioning when viewing at home. I stopped going to theaters long before COVID. I can't even remember the last movie I saw in a theater. I prefer the couch and the pause button.

I came across this recently:

<a href="https://www.slashfilm.com/673162/heres-why-movie-dialogue-has-gotten-more-difficult-to-understand-and-three-ways-to-fix-it/" rel="nofollow">https://www.slashfilm.com/673162/heres-why-movie-dialogue-has-gotten-more-difficult-to-understand-and-three-ways-to-fix-it/</a>

Can't wait for part 2 to come out in 2023.

My hearing is starting to go and I struggled to hear some of the dialogue but that's the case with most movies today.
