Might be a good idea.
First up, the Dnieper River system, Europe’s lesser-known major river. But for a very long time an important north south transit way from the Baltics to the Black Sea. The Vikings used it. The Cossacks used it. The Lithuanians used it. Cutting from headwaters in Belarus, the Dneiper bisects Ukraine like an aortic artery with the capital city at its heart.
Several hydroelectric dams. Navigable around the famous falls by reservoirs, locks, and canals all the way to Kiev. along the way, important mining and manufacturing cities, roads and railways.
Control the river, even just the eastern side, the dams and other infrastructure, and you control the country. That’s been true for a thousand years.

- The Washington Post has a good overview

A side note
- It's good tank country.

For reference, a size comparison
-
I did a similar comparison, it’s pretty much the same size as Texas.
-
Oddly, though, even if there is a war there they will have fewer guns than Texas...
-
I suspect you are right about the unregistered firearms
