I’ve been reviewing the tactics of the Winter War, USSR vs. Finland, 1939-40.

Overview at Wikipedia.

Interesting that this article came out last December: https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/12/19/ukraine-finland-russia-ww2-soviet-union/

Nutshell: USSR invades Finland along a wide front after faking a border attack. Overwhelmed, the Finnish people unite, and manage to kick ass. Lasted 105 days. Western countries poured in aid. The famous “Motti” tactic; cutting off the over-extended invading force into segments, then dispersing/destroying them. We just saw this on the new tonight. Column gets backed up, shelled, it turns around and disperses, completely cut off from re-supply, commander killed, no plan and little chance to come up with a new one. The truce resulted in Finland staying Finland but gave up several chunks of territory to the USSR.

All this sounds familiar. Except the brutally cold weather then and the nuclear threat now, of course.
