My early work as a grad student was on ultrafast lasers, where the laser pulses are measured in femtoseconds (femtosecond is 1 millionth of a billionth of a second) they are now working on attosecond pulses 1000 times shorter than femtosecond....

Ultrashort lasers can be used to take 'snapshots' of processes that take place over very short time-scales, and interact with matter in very different ways than longer pulsed more traditional lasers.

What the...

Probably the best pop-culture, science-based show ever. Total nerds, each and every one. Each segment used a logical scientific method to answer questions sent in by watchers. The design and fabrication to conduct their experiments are amazing. Things sometimes go wrong.

...is that they overdid the redneck racist satire. Yes, I concur with the sentiment, but Brooks pounded it so hard that I believe it had just the opposite of the intended effect. Of course, subtlety was never Mel's forte.

But you're right, Wilder's "Frankenstein' was pitch-perfect. And the rest of the cast was right on target. That whole movie was a finely crafted comedic gem, sending up every cliche in the Hollywood Frankenstein trope. And Teri Garr never looked lovelier.

'High Anxiety' was a brilliant, but devastating, satire on psychiatry and psychology. But it was gentle, subtle, and consequently, much more effective.

Probably the palantír from Amon Sûl (AKA Weathertop), lost in the ice bay back in '75.

I wonder what happened to the props from that scene. It would be so much fun to have them in the "Mushroom House. Even a reproduction would be hysterical.

I understand about Blazing Saddles as I have gathered you are not a big fan of Westerns. And it is over the top. But Gene and Clevon are a brilliant team. The scenes with Mel himself, not so much.

And that is not even Gene's best role, who is one of the very best comedic actors of that era. Young Frankenstein is his zenith. His pacing in a single sentence, like "I thought I told you to never interrupt me whILE I AM WORKING!" Almost used it this morning working on my taxes when the cat came begging into my office.

But Young Frankenstein may very well be the funniest movie ever made. Another Mel Brooks favorite of mine is High Anxiety. It has been highly underrated by the critics.

Yes WOTW scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I liked the Speilberg remake, but the original is still the best. I have both on video, and I've seen the new one several times, but I watch the original at least once a year.

See if you can locate The Orb. I think that is the long lost Palantir.

Agreed, there are some great bits in Sleeper. But I'll take Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein for comedies of that era. Mrs. P. and I are planning a bike ride tomorrow, I'll plan the route to get a picture of the orgasmatron house from the exact same POV as the film.

And yes, that was a great scene from WOTW. I have not watched it in a very long time. Scared me as a kid.
