Disgusting. Could not believe I saw that.
First off, I like both these gentlemen. Chris is a great comedian, often raw, often upsetting, but funny, and I don’t believe he is malicious. I like(d) Will too, great actor, he deserved his Oscar nod.
Was the joke funny? Meh. Doesn’t matter. Nothing excuses Will’s behavior. Not love of family, defending his wife, nothing. He’ll be remembered for this forever. He actually laughed at the joke before he went up there and slapped Chris. Like everyone, I thought it was a comedy bit at first. And Chris handled it with poise, pretty much offered his other cheek. I haven’t confirmed this, but I have heard that Will himself even made a GI Jane joke about his wife earlier on social media.
I understand why she chose that hair style due to a medical condition. Her head, she can do whatever she wants with it. She looked great.
I get kidded about my hair. A boss once commented “You know what is under a ponytail, don’t you?”
You don’t slap people over a joke, no matter how distasteful.
Many, many years ago, Mrs P. wore a wig because of chemotherapy. We were walking along a busy street full of restaurants full of people. A group of young men made a comment about her hair as we passed, and it hurt her deeply, as she was already scared and self-conscious about her looks. I turned around and approached their table. I told them something like, “My wife is undergoing chemotherapy and she is wearing a wig. Your comment hurt her when she really doesn’t need that shit. Please remember this moment someday when your mother, your sister, your wife, or your daughter goes through the same thing. Have a nice afternoon, boys.” I walked off while they blushed and tried to offer apologies. One caught up and apologized to her directly, which she, class act she is, accepted.
I hope that stung more, and longer, than any slap across a face.
I’ve lost all respect for Will Smith.
