In the 1930s when a child got measles or scarlet fever the room was kept shut except for access by one adult and afterwards the bed linen was burnt, a new mattress if it was affordable and the through scrub you describe. Several elderly relatives told me of their experiences.

During the Victorian Era, when tuberculosis was rampant, Spring cleaning involved removing everything from a room, scrubbing the room with borax, and cleaning everything before it went back into the room. Borax, by the way, is a far superior cleaner to most of the products you'll find on the shelf. So is vinegar and baking soda.

Now that the weather is warmer, and we can throw open the windows, we are doing something similar. I don't mind it. Like you said, put on some music, or a sports event, and get it done.

Your posted comic is great, grumbles at first, followed by a sense of well-being. The hardest part is the first ten minutes. Four hours later and I'm still going.
