Or for some imagined alien species... for humans, however, it could never work.

Pure unfettered capitalism is equally unacceptable... for many of the same reasons.

No system that allows a single person to acquire 100's of billions while his fellow citizens starve should be allowed to continue.

No system that allows the wealthy to buy control of politicians is ever going to be just.

I do not know what an ideal system would be, but I do know that humanity has only 'progressed' away from it. We long ago passed the exit for that utopia, and those that are now driving the bus have no plans to turn back.

Capitalism with rules. Capitalism doesn't work with monopolies. Fraud is a crime. Corporations need to pay for negative externalities such as pollution. Polishing the rough edges of capitalism that leaves those at the bottom in desperate situations is necessary for social stability. The free market will on its own move resources to where they are in demand. There is no need for a government bureaucrat to decide how much milk and meat is delivered daily to every supermarket in America. The free market does it on its own. Goods and services will naturally flow to where they are valued as a law of nature. But regulations are needed to make sure the milk and meat aren't tainted, and governments need to intervene if there are disruptions from natural disasters, wars etc.
