I had to practice archery at a range and have a secure way of transporting the bow and arrows in my car, I.e. locked in the boot in a proper archery bag.

Assault style and relatively innocuous high-capacity rifles like the Ruger 10/22. There will be a buyback at the end of this year. There's a lot of grumbling among Canadian gun enthusiasts. Hopefully it will go well like Australia.

My high school friend used to bring his shotgun in the morning and put it in his locker for duck hunting when school got out.

Remember when that was the big deal in the 1970's? Small, stubbed nose handguns, easy to conceal? It was the topic back in the day. Seems like a simpler time.

there were all sorts of legal restrictions on handguns. OTOH, rifles and shotguns were almost totally free of controls and regulation. This made sense at the time, handguns were concealable, and were suited to robbery and street time, while long guns were common and on display on many pickups and on the street in what was a very rural and agricultural society.

Today, handguns take the most lives by far, but military style weapons are involved in the most dramatic mass shooting events, so the emphasis on control seems to have reversed.

The moral, of course, is that gun control legislation, which as a gun owner I enthusiastically support, should be well thought out, and guided by study and research, not public fashion and political considerations.

You are free to fire rifles or shoot skeet in the wilds with a few restrictions. Transport of long guns requires common sense precautions like the ones you stated.

Here is a short summary of how Canada treats the right to self defense.

P.S. Not all Canadians follow the letter of the law.

I like the idea of guns OK in the home, but not out in public
(except at authorized shooting venues). As for calling the Mounties every time you go to the range, that seems a bit excessive. Simply field-stripping the piece for transport should be sufficient for safety purposes.

I do not support the 'guns locked up' provision, or the surprise visits from the gendarmerie at random times. As for not using the weapon for home defense, that's ludicrous. That's the primary reason to own one! With a possible exception for homes with children, the family atomics should be kept loaded and locked and readily accessible.

But handguns must be kept secure in your home and locked. And they will randomly come to your home to inspect how you store them. If you want to target practice you must do so at a gun range. But first you have to call the RCMP an obtain an "authorization to transport". You tell them when you will be traveling to the range and I think also the route you're planning to take there.

Another difference is you're not supposed to use them for home defense. If you do, you will be charged. "If" the shooting is deemed justifiable, it means you could afford a good lawyer.

I thought handguns were already banned in Canada.

I knew long guns were legal, I understand they have a terrible moose problem, But there really is no need for anyone to own a hand gun.
