I’ve never been one to go down the bigger car, bigger house route. I have the same size house and car as I always have had. Sure, a bigger car and house would be lovely but I made the choice not to go down that route as I don’t need them. The benefits are good, I haven’t had a mortgage since I was in my late 20s. That’s the only reason we haven’t ended up homeless so I have no regrets.

All prices here have to be quoted including tax rather than showing it separately.

https://www.globalpetrolprices.com is worth a look but the prices are a little out of date as petrol prices at the pumps change several times during the day.

Or have you already made the appropriate conversions?

Also, are you talking US dollars, or converting from the currency in your country? (NZD?, I presume you live in New Zealand). Also, are you counting any taxes added in your petrol price?

trouble in the middle east brought inflated gas prices--AND rationing. We could only buy gas on certain days, determined by our license tag number.

I lived 35 miles from where I worked, one-way, and even though I drove a VW, many was the time I rolled into a gas station running on fumes only to have to wait in line for my turn at the pump for a measly 5 gallons. I learned my lesson.

When gas prices came down, and I had a little cash in my pocket, I didn't rush out and buy that big sports car I wanted, and for the rest of my life I made it a point to move as close to work as I possibly could. Since then, I've never lived more than 10 miles from my job. And I've always driven a compact 4-banger with a stick shift.

Sure, sometimes shit happens and sometimes we can't help where we live or where we work, or even what we drive. But when you CAN do something about it, there's no excuse for taking advantage of a temporary low gas price to cash in. I'm not knocking folks like Pebble who have been forced by circumstances beyond their control to hemorrhage cash to keep the car on the road. But let's face it, the average motorist has no one to blame but himself when the inevitable energy crisis rears its turbaned head. New Zealand has to import its oil. But America is supposedly "energy-independent". Yeah, right.

Sure, the poor always suffer more when hard times come, and I feel sorry for them because its not their fault. But the extravagant need to suffer a bit, too. After all, it is their fault.
Look at the traffic on the roads today, after half a century of undependable energy supplies and volatile prices; muscle cars, SUV's, monster trucks... It's not like we couldn't see this coming. I'm sorry, but I just can't feel sorry for them. And I feel completely justified in blaming them when transport costs and inflationary energy prices bite me on the ass, no matter how small my carbon footprint is.

And- in a cruel twist- the poor often have to commute further than the more affluent- the jobs are in the cities, but the cost of housing in the cites are such that unless you are well off, you can't live in the cities.

So, in general, higher gas prices disproportionately impact those that can least afford it.

And while Biden has no control over gas prices, you can be damn sure that he will get the blame- increasing the chances that we will have a Trump or Desantis in charge of dismantling our democracy in 3 years.

So yeah... LOTS of reasons to care about the gas prices.

It is not impacting me personally- yet... my car can get me to work and back without using any gas... but the follow on damage, the backlash, will impact us all...

Food prices are already up, and making the costs of transportation higher will not help- again, disproportionately impacting those who can afford it least.

The war in Ukraine will drive food cost higher still...

It is the perfect storm....

Petrol was $10 a gallon this morning just down the road from me, the same price as my hourly wage.

Stop start journeys on rural twisty roads with frequent stops for cows, horses, tractors, bikes etc. I get around 40 miles per gallon from it (60mpg on the motorway) It holds 9 gallons. At the moment I’m sharing it with a learner driver so it’s different to the norm right now,

That's 20 minutes a day on the road.

At highway speeds, that's about a hundred miles a week.

I can do the math.

This means another essential bill isn’t getting paid.

You have cheap petrol there, we pay US$9 for a US gallon if we find a cheap petrol station otherwise US$9.60

A month ago it cost me US$8.
Oh, and my commute is 10 minutes each way.
