of, as a kid, being taken to Ybor City, the Cuban section of Tampa, and treated to a batido de mamey. Mamey (mah-MAY) is a tropical fruit common in the Caribbean but which does not grow in North America. It was flown into Tampa from Cuba as a frozen pulp. and made into a milkshake-type concoction which was truly nectar of the gods. I guess it was a smoothie, of sorts. It is the most delicious substance I have ever tasted.

You can get batidos now in Miami, but like the famous Sangwiche Cubano found there, they just don't compare with the ones I remember.

Cuban sandwich: Roast pork, ham, salami, pickles and provolone on French stick, with mayo and mustard. Light toasting optional, but NEVER waffle-pressed flat. And no lettuce and tomato, por favor. If you want a salad, have it on the side.

They’ve been really popular here for years. I won’t touch them with a very long barge pole,

You can make your own at home with the whole fruit to get the fibre but it’s far better to just eat the fruit,
