<blockquote>"The impacts on farmers if foot and mouth gets in are too gut-wrenching to even contemplate," said Fiona Simson, president of the National Farmers' Federation. "But it's not just about farmers. Wiping $80 billion off Australia's GDP would be an economic disaster for everyone."

Australia has started ramping up biosecurity controls at airports, checking luggage for meat and cheese products and warning tourists that dirt on their shoes could inadvertently cause Australia's first FMD outbreak in 150 years.

But one control that hasn't been rolled out yet is footbaths -- containers of potent chemicals that new arrivals step into to kill traces of the disease they may be carrying on their shoes. The problem is that footwear typically worn in laid-back Bali isn't compatible with standard biosecurity measures.

You aren’t allowed to wear shoes that have previously been worn on a farm. I tend to buy a new pair of sandals or trainers depending on the time of year and wear those when flying in to NZ.

Yes, we will probably do Vancouver and go to see the orca at the same time, if we win the lottery.

One of the worst aspects of international travel is customs and immigration. Some are mellow, even kind, some are scary. Returning to the US is always either a bit scary and or completely annoyingly over-crowded and confusing. Ireland was chill, Russia was scary, Mexico can be concerning.

It pays to research what can get you into trouble. I was advised to make sure my shoes did not have a grain of soil going into Australia and also New Zealand. I understand the reason. But they do inspect your shoes. And there was a bin full of shoes that were taken from now barefoot travelers. New Zealand took a jar of honey Mrs P. bought in Australia. The honey was from New Zealand.

If you want to do around the world, Canada should serve.

But what a horrible story. Put a uniform on a zealot and you got trouble.
