I am known for having an eye twitch when people call what comes out of volcanos "smoke." They make it a point to point it out now. Someone says, "hey, the crater is smoking", and someone else will say, "Look out, pod's eye is twitching." So, I have a reputation of being pedantic on this subtle, but important, distinction. Or lava verses magma. It's just one of those things that gets under my skin, and it is hard to keep my mouth shut. And I keep it shut more often than not. Especially in real life social situations. Correcting basic scientific errors just makes me come across as an annoying asshole. So, I bite my lip and let it go. But there are times it is just so bloody difficult. Due to the internet, this has become more difficult. Friends will ask my scientific opinion about a youtube video they watched with some ridiculous claim about Yellowstone, or the earth's rotation, sunspots causing global warming, or some damn thing, and it almost breaks my heart to tell them they have been lied to. Their face falls and their eyes glaze over as I try to describe the difference between the earth's magnetic poles and the rotation poles.

My intro geology prof was brutal about this sort of thing. He charged a six pack of beer if you used "rock" instead of "mineral." He drank a lot of beer.

It wasn't until Star Trek came on TV that the average American knew the difference between a 'galaxy' and a 'solar system'. And no one seems to be able to grasp the concept of 'constellation'. Science is hard, its boring, its for sissies. And its so hard, only 'brains' can do it. And everybody knows 'brains' are not cool.

The average US college graduate cannot tell you the difference between an atom and a molecule, or a compound and an element. Unless they are pursuing a scientific degree, they use interchangeably the terms Force, Energy, Power and Momentum, as if they all meant the same thing. I'd be willing to bet the average American can't even name the branches of government, or the difference between the House and the Senate, or find Spain on a map.

Yes, there are ignorant people all over the world, but only in the USA are affluent people with access to education and media so poorly informed, and worse, they aren't even aware of it. Even worse than that, they often seem proud of it.

And when it comes to math, forget it. I have run across many otherwise intelligent, articulate people who are totally helpless with even the simplest math. I'm not talking calculus or algebra or trig, I mean how to add or multiply fractions, how to convert decimals to fractions and back, or the Associative, Distributive and Commutative laws.

And go to any bookstore, and I'll bet the astrology section is three times the size of the astronomy shelf.

Americans aren't any dumber or smarter than anyone else in the world, but we seem to have a cultural distaste for education and knowledge. We seem to think its effeminate, conceited, elitist, anti-social, cowardly, even subversive. And those who aren't ignorant and stupid still have learned to keep it to themselves, because we so desperately want to be just like everybody else.

My cousin Rudy from Cuba remarked on that soon after he came to this country, at the age of 16. "Americans aren't necessarily dumb, but the ones who aren't all seem determined to hide it."

My grandfather, a bit older and wiser, put it this way; "Americans aren't as smart as they think they are, but they're not as stupid as we think they are."

The voice doesn't bother me but I've seen similar videos that appear to be written by AI. Nothing but teasers and generalizations that that aren't very well tied together.

I thought the explanation of how the black hole was imaged was good.

IT's my pet peeve. I hate it. I have seen some videos that are good that use it, but I just can't listen to it. Uncanny Valley.

The production is good on those videos. That takes time. One of the things channels like this do, is to make occasional good videos not knowing that now you are going to get all kinds of crap fed to you.

Something I have started to do with channels I don't know: Don't play the video. Stop it immediately. I don't want the ads to play so they get the pennies. Click on their channels and see what else they produce. If it is clickbait, they don't get my views.
