If Trump were to die tomorrow, his troglodyte army of knuckledraggers would still be there, and it would take no time before some Cruz, Desantis, or Scott would step into his shoes.

Trump is NOT the problem. It is America's racism, fascism and religious fundamentalism. That isn't going to go away when Trump dies. It won't even go away if he is totally defeated in the next election he runs in.

Trump's shtick has gotten old for all but his hard core base. Sure, those folks will follow him off a cliff, but recent polling shows him in the high 40s for the GOP nomination. That means better than half of republicans are open to another candidate. Losing the last three elections (four if you count the Jan 2021 GA runoff) has concerned a lot of the GOP about his truckloads of baggage. Democrats hate him so much they would crawl across broken glass to vote against him. A majority of independents feel the same way. Even a sliver of republicans feel that way. College educated suburbanites are a must win constituency for the GOP and they despise Trump. Furthermore, there is nothing Trump will ever do to win them over. That cake is baked. The extremely high anti Trump turnout in the last three elections does not show any complacency. If Trump's name is anywhere near an election the anti Trump vote will be enormous.

Dems kept the Senate and won more Governor races. Election deniers lost every battleground state . Dems won big in many state legislatures. We lost the House but the GOP's margin is razor thin and there are about 40 republican moderates who have declared they will block the most bat shit crazy tendencies of the Freedom Caucus. If Warnock wins in GA a 51-49 majority in the Senate allows Dems to create oversight committees that they can't do with just a 50-50 split. They can take up and further the work of the House Jan 6 committee.

The GOP has a huge problem. If Trump wins the nomination he is the one candidate most likely to lose the general election for them, and they know it. But they have another problem, if DeSantis or another republican wins the nomination, what will Trump NOT do? Do you think he will say "I lost to the better candidate fair and square. I'm endorsing him fully and want all my voters to vote for him"? Of course he won't, he'll claim he was cheated and is a victim and run as a third party independent. He'll relentlessly attack the GOP nominee and burn the GOP to the ground because all he cares about is himself.

No we're not out of the woods, but we can see the path that leads out of the woods. Our problems are far from over, but they're not just starting. It feels more like we are at the end of the beginning.

...but his followers are just as numerous, and they are increasingly more desperate, and more dangerous. And bolder, because now they know they can get away with it.

Those few who are publicly abandoning him didn't really care that much for him anyway, but they supported him because he served their economic agenda. And now, they're looking for someone even more virulent and malignant (and competent!) that can promote their fascist policies even more effectively. They felt they "could control him" and replace him later with someone more acceptable to the American public, and more amenable to taking orders. Where have we heard that before?

Meanwhile, those of us opposed to Trumpism are becoming more complacent and distracted the "weaker' he gets. That's what's really pathetic.

We cannot afford to forget that we live in a nation where about a third of the population actually supports Trump and everything he stands for, and where one of our major political parties votes in lock-step to back him up and protect him from accountability for his crimes. When they mount their next offensive, they won't make the same mistakes he did. In spite of the poor performance of the GOP in the last election, they still made gains, in the House, the statehouses, the schoolboards, and the courts. Our first line of defense, the honest and decent Republicans in the Conservative press and government have been systematically purged or primaried from the Party. And who knows what beast is slouching out of fetid Southern swamps, waiting to be born?

We ain't out of the woods yet, brother. Our problems are just starting.
