After more than twenty years, the firm that does my taxes, informed me that they can’t do my taxes anymore. Not enough people to do for their small clients. A literal “Dear John” letter. Not a call. Just cold text. I did wind up talking to the boss, but he was just “get Turbo Tax.” Went to their office to get the digital copies. Absolutely no conversation as the secretary handed me the thumb drive. No “thanks” for decades of relationship. Boss was on the phone.

Pretty sad, really.

Had a chat the other day with an old friend, co-author, and someone I spent a lot of time with in the field. We completely disagree politically, which has been fun over the years. But he is on hard times. Did a gig in Nevada logging core where his vast experience was totally disrespected. I mean, this guy is brilliant describing the geology of drill results. Seen it all. Probably logged a couple thousand miles of core in his day. Not just documenting the rock, but understanding it. Getting the bigger picture.

The young manager didn’t care for his input. Just log it into the computer, and do it fast, you’ve a quota for the day. Sad. What a waste of expertise.

And I suppose some folks just go on the dole or live off their families.

But that still doesn’t answer the question of how everyone else is making ends meet. If employers are desperate for workers, and if the ‘free market’ isn’t boosting wages enough to meet the demand, how are all those Millennials and Gen X,Y and Z’s making the payments on all their student loans?

Honestly, I just couldn’t do it anymore. I’ve a nest egg so I think I’m okay for the long run. Knock wood.

But honestly, my last clients for mining projects were pump and dump charlatans. Started to really make me sick. One company didn’t even own the mineral rights. One asked me to return and be paid with a bullshit crypto coin. They’ve gone bust. I still get offers now and again, but they suck.

There’s a great book about mining swindles called “A Hole in The Ground with a Liar on Top.”

So, I’m done. I learned a lot; had many adventures. But nothing I ever did resulted in anything productive. Not a single ounce or pound. I’ll stick to writing papers and sharing my knowledge in chat rooms.
