I would imagine you're right about Washington and Kiev preparing for war. That's probably why it's gone on for almost a year. n/t

I would move mobile assault forces (and bomber and fighter squadrons) right up to the borders of Ukraine and Belarus, having them ready to cross in the moment the Russians did something I didn't like. The fighters would be defensive, but the bombers would have obvious offensive potential.

Move defensive anti-air batteries (with NATO crews!)around every civilian target in Ukraine and tell Putin any attack on them would be considered an attack on NATO.

I would put all NATO forces on full alert, but leave them in defensive positions. The Russians are smart enough to know when a unit is a direct threat to their territory, or simply a precautionary measure on our part.

Start training Ukrainian units (in NATO territory) on NATO aircraft, artillery, armor, communications, intelligence and electronic warfare gear. Make no effort to hide this from Putin.

Continue (and increase) financial, diplomatic, material and military support to Ukraine.

Tell Belarus (privately, no need to embarrass anyone publicly) that any aggression toward Ukraine would be considered an attack on NATO and would be responded to appropriately).

Russia has the intelligence capacity to know none of these measures poses a threat to Russian territory, but they would also realize it would highly complicate continued Russian aggression in Ukraine.

And finally, (on NATO territory) I would start training Ukrainians how to operate long range missile and aviation units capable of striking deep into Russia. I would keep this quiet, but I would tell Putin confidentially (no need to embarrass him publicly), that if his attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine did not stop, I would give the Ukrainians permission to do whatever they wanted with these weapons as soon as they were fully trained on them. Mr Putin may have convinced himself NATO is a bunch of wimps, but by now he knows the Ukrainians aren't.

I believe much of this is already being done now, we just aren't publicizing it. The Ukrainians complain they never have enough, (and can you blame them?) But I suspect they are already getting much more than the public suspects. Biden is letting his generals take the lead on this, and I think they are doing a great job. But can you imagine how this would be handled if Trump was in charge?

There is a lot going on here that isn't immediately obvious. For example, remember how just before the war started we were telling Ukraine Putin was getting ready to strike, but Zelensky said "No, don't inflame the situation. Putin is bluffing." Bullshit. Both Washington and Kyiv knew exactly what Moscow was planning, and were feigning fear and ignorance while quietly preparing an ambush. The defense in the first few days after 24 Feb was not hastily put together, it was planned way ahead of time.

Right now, what I am mostly afraid of is that some elements of the GOP are so desperate to make Biden look bad in this affair that they are ready to betray Ukraine just so that they can blame Biden for "losing" the war. And I think they are going to use the financial negotiations in the House to try and stop Ukraine funding. Most of the GOP is on Biden's side on this issue, but the question is, will they have the balls to back him up against the troglodyte wing of the party? Tucker Carlson is really backing Putin all the way on this. The Right is ready to sell Ukraine down the river just to stick it to the libs.
