<blockquote>"It also has a long history as a medium of exchange. I am told that makes it ideal as money (let’s face it, barter can be very cumbersome)."</blockquote>

A barter economy would never have developed even the feeble economic systems of early civilization much less modern society. Thus the advent of the medium of money. And yes perception of value is of course fundamental to demand, whether gold of silver or gems or paper money or electronic money or WHATEVER.

Certainly if civilization collapsed a la The Walking Dead then almost only necessities would have value.

I have to tell you that your comment, and my musings of response, have resulted in a fairly interesting short story idea about the first stone age discover of a gold nugget in a creek.

Could be one of these short story challenge topics?

It is also easily divisible, and impervious to corrosion. It is also very dense, and highly portable, so it is easily stored and transported. It is malleable, easily hammered into thin sheets and fantastic shapes. And it has very little practical or industrial uses. Even gold jewelry is valuable primarily for the workmanship involved in its production.

It also has a long history as a medium of exchange. I am told that makes it ideal as money (let's face it, barter can be very cumbersome).

But as far as I can tell, its only value is that everyone wants it. Like all sorts of money, it is essentially worthless in hard times, it is only of value during good times. Gold will be useless after the Apocalypse, I would invest in canned goods, camping gear, blankets and ammunition.

There is the production side which can require considerable capital vs the demand side as a store of value as well the products which require its use. But your right, you can't eat it...
