Actually, I can almost sympathize with the Conservatives on this one. What do these people want, for us to open up our borders for anyone who wants in? Ok, all four of my grandparents were from the old country. I was brought up in an immigrant household in an immigrant community. I am steeped in the immigrant experience. I don't need anyone to remind me that all Americans (except for the Natives who were nearly exterminated, and the Blacks who were dragged here in chains), started out as immigrants. I know these people are suffering, some from severe economic hardship, others by brutal tyrannies and dictators. But every nation has the right to control its borders, to decide who comes in and who gets turned back. That is what being a nation means! We have every right to turn them away if we don't have the resources to take care of them, or to absorb them. I GET THAT.

But we're lazy, and we're greedy, and we always want something for nothing. When we need someone to pick our cotton, or work in our sweatshops, our lay down our railroads, we fling our doors open and welcome those black and brown and yellow hordes, even if it means our own people can't get work. And when we need someone to pick our fruit, or buss our tables. or make are beds, or work in our slaughterhouses then those "illegals" are welcome. Until payday, when we can't wait to kick them back out into the cold. "Go back where you came from [insert racial slur here]." But when we need doctors and scientists and engineers because our own kids are too lazy and stupid to take the math and science courses, THEN we welcome Jose and Gupta, and Ali and Li, (sometimes even subsidizing their graduate work here), and all those other bright young kids educated at public expense in foreign universities that don't have frats or multi million $ football programs, or Bus Ad Departments. After all, it will keep professional salaries down, won't it? And controlling salaries is all that really matters, isn't it?

So when efforts are made to enforce the foreign labor laws or implement a reasonable and orderly immigration system, the same people who are always talking about America and Heritage and Free Fucking Enterprise will obstruct every effort to enforce our green card laws and implement a reasonable immigration policy. They would rather have the illegals take our jobs because they'll work cheap, and because they are so scared of being deported they won't cause trouble, or join unions, or fight for decent pay and working conditions. And we certainly don't want them voting, do we? We might wind up with another Obama.

Yes, we do have every right to control our borders. But we have abused that privilege and forfeited that right because deep down inside, we still feel nostalgic for that ole' plantation, do dah, do dah, don't we?

I feel better already.
