It's a disturbing feeling when every house you see, no matter how old or run down, is worth over a million dollars. As I walked to the beach I saw ultra modern homes the size of apartment buildings. One had a 2023 Corvette and a new RangeRover In the driveway. The kids around here drive Lamborghinis and McLarans. In the near future I won't be able to live here anymore. Unless I win the lottery. Not counting on it.

There are actually a couple good reasons for Ukraine to blow the dam as well. It wrecked the frontline defenses the Ruskies had just across the Dniper river, and actually killed quite a few of their troops. Also it will lead to fresh water shortages in Crimea. Further, it appears Ukraine was not planning an offense there as just a few days after the dam was blown Ukes are launching their long awaited counteroffensive to the northeast of the dam area. That said, the majority of towns and villages affected by flooding are on the Uke side and the tactical advantage of the dam blowing absolutely favors the Ruskies in the short run. So it's not a slam dunk as to who is behind it really, but the Ruskies are the most likely culprit.

That's pretty much where the democratic party has been for many many decades, and one of the reasons I'm a democrat. Capitalism works, except where it doesn't. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, but definitely get rid of the bathwater.

I'm starting to come to the realization that maybe a LITTLE wealth disparity and gentrification is a good thing. It provides a bit of incentive to everyone, and rewards those who are genuinely more productive than most. But a system that doesn't provide everyone with at least a chance to succeed, and a basic subsistence if they can't, is doomed to fail. Not only will it cause an inevitable and violent backlash, it will also fail to harness the huge reservoir of talent that resides in every society. "A mind is a terrible thing to waste" isn't just about race.

And what should never be tolerated is an arrangement where the wealthy can use their wealth to make themselves richer and keep everyone else poor.

They identify with liberal values, hate capitalism and envision a utopian resource based economy.

There is nothing stopping wealth disparity and gentrification. The lack of opportunities would likely cause them to revolt someday, if they weren't getting high to cope.

Still in Canada. Political attitudes are varied just like in the US, but there's a lot more waffling on the issues. No one wants to make a decision and when they finally do it's often reversed a short time later.

The only voices I've heard supporting the Russians are all conservative. To be fair, I agree most conservatives support Ukraine. Still, the vast majority of those who are backing Putin are all right wingers, of the Trump variety. I know of only one exception to this general rule; my cousin, Robert the Red, AKA Bolshie Bob. And since I haven't spoken to him in a couple of years, even he might have changed his mind by now.

I think the only reason conservatives feel a need to support the Russian side is that they know liberals are pro-Ukraine and so they must go on record as being anti-Ukraine.
Since everything the Libs do is evil, agreeing with them on even the obvious threatens their position. There is that, plus the role Ukraine played in humiliating Trump when the former refused to participate in his Hunter Biden blackmail.

Tell me, are you still in Canada?

Which makes no sense. The Ukes are on the offensive, it makes no sense for them to flood the path into Crimea. It also leaves them with an enormous rescue and cleanup job to do, perhaps postponing or even cancelling their offensive. And why would they destroy one of their own national assets, not just the dam and reservoir, but the flooded agriculture, population, property and industry on BOTH sides of the river?

Now it makes perfect military sense for the Russians to blow the dam. It provides a protective barrier against attack for Crimea and it saddles Ukraine with an enormous humanitarian problem as well as a huge obstacle to their military plans..

But how can Putin's propagandists possibly imagine they would expect any third party to believe the Ukrainians had a motive? Besides, they garrisoned the dam when it was breached. There was no way for the Ukes to even get to it. Even if the dam failed due to an accident, it was controlled by Putin, it is his responsibility.

One of the principles of propaganda is that it not be immediately recognizable as such. Putin obviously doesn't care he is ruining his country's reputation, his lies are like Trump's: he doesn't care whether anyone believes them or not. He's not even pretending to hide his crimes any more.

Which makes you wonder about the motives of those who still support him.
