When I lived in California I experienced several earthquakes, but it was my first that left the most lasting perceptual impression. I had just finished my lunchtime jog at work and I was in the company shower. Suddenly I felt nauseous and disoriented (there was no shaking or trembling that I could recall) and I felt maybe I had worked out too hard and was suffering from a stroke or fainting spell. I realized what was happening when the other guys in the shower hastily wrapped their asses with towels and ran out of the building, lathered up and dripping wet. I followed shortly thereafter.

I mean there was a feeling of dread...subsonic sound can induce that feeling... though maybe it was just knowing on some level that it was an earthquake also created that dread. The rumble I felt seemed to be in the air, not the ground.

I have been in a couple of earthquakes that could be felt... none seemed as LOUD as this minor one...

I suspect that a cave in would be a very different experience...

Is this a low flying jet, or an earthquake?

Pitch was way too low for a jet, I was bracing for the jolts that never came.

Ominous?

I'm following a lot of research into very low frequency signals from earth movements. And giving thought to how animals (including humans) perceive them. Been curious about this since my uncle's neighborhood was shook by - in my opinion - the collapse of a cave under the area. All the neighbors described different sensations. They all had immediate thoughts.

"Is that a racoon in the attic?"

"What fell in the basement?"

"Was that a car wreck?"

What was your first thought?

It was an ominous sound... its hard to describe... my dog showed no signs of predicting it, lol... she only noticed it because I turned on the light and was listening.

It came from all around, like a low flying jet but much lower in pitch.

Fun that you felt it.

The USGS takes some time, usually 30 minutes to report on most eq's. There is auto reporting, but these are then reviewed by humans before we get a good number. The lowest magnitude reported on their site is 2.5 in the United States. Elsewhere in the world it may take a longer time before reported for small temblors. Due to lack of equipment, some areas have very poor reporting.
