And they always turn up. When DDT was first invented, it was not thought to be hazardous to humans or wildlife because the killing mechanism worked on insect nervous systems only. Its role in attacking bird eggshells or as a human carcinogen wasn't discovered until much later. When you go fucking around with fundamental processes, unexpected shit always happens.
