So some good news in the end for Boeing and NASA. Now to find out what happened with the thrusters and Starliner should be back in business. The soonest it will fly again is August 2025.

Persistent concerns with the vehicle’s propulsion systems mean Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will return home next year in a SpaceX vehicle.

And there it is. Just got to say I told you so :-)

Bad management. Boeing's corporate culture and decentralized model is certainly to blame for a lot of their problems. RL mentioned quality control, and that really is the issue here. It must be engrained into the manufacturing process of any company, especially one where human lives are directly at risk. There’s nothing inherently wrong with letting the bottom line be important in how you run your shop, but you can’t put blinders on and cut corners on QC and safety.

Fortunately, the vast majority of business leaders in the world understand that failures in QC can not only hurt people, it can put them out of business.

Suni Wiliams and Butch Wilmore would sneak into the shuttle bay and steal a shuttle home.

That's what happens when a company built by engineers gets taken over by business majors.

Not sure what led to their QC falling so low, but manned spaceflight is one area you REALLY want NASAs over the top rigorous testing and safety policies....

NASA Says Boeing Starliner Astronauts May Fly Home on SpaceX in 2025

...on Wednesday, NASA officials admitted that the issues might be more serious than first thought and that the astronauts might not return on the Boeing vehicle, after all.

The agency is exploring a backup option for the astronauts, Suni Wiliams and Butch Wilmore, to instead hitch a ride back to Earth on a spacecraft built by Boeing’s competitor SpaceX.

The astronauts’ stay in orbit, which was to be as short as eight days, could be extended into next year...

...Under the contingency plan, the next SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule would travel to the space station with only two astronauts instead of four. Ms. Williams and Mr. Wilmore would then join as full-fledged members of the space station crew for a half-year stay and return on the Crew Dragon around next February...

Shaping up to be exactly what I expected.

"After nearly two months of postponement, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are still on board the ISS. But NASA and Boeing say they still plan to return the two aboard Starliner."

The best laid plans of mice and rocket scientists...

My money is still on the return home in a Space X Dragon.
