The only surprise is how long they waited. Clearly the Iranians didn’t want this fight but felt like they had no choice after Israel’s dramatic and complete decapitation of Hezbollah and now ground invasion of Lebanon.
For Israel’s part, the attacks on Hezbollah were inevitable. Missile attacks from Lebanon turned the towns in northern Israel into ghost towns as resident had fled further south. Israel, a tiny nation to begin with, had essentially shrunk. Returning security to the north is the fundamental policy aim here.
I also expect Israel to retaliate against Iran by taking out their nuclear facilities.
