There was an issue with overheating of the CPU that took some time to sort out, but now it works as it should, I started learning to install and use various AI software- not made easy by the fact I have next to zero Linux experience... I ended up using ChatGPT to help me install and use the software... really only had 1 evening to play with it so far...
Here are some failed attempts, I actually had some successful attempts at getting mostly the scene I wanted, unfortunately that was when I hadn't learned to get the output in the form of a video I could upload...
<a href="https://youtu.be/sgHZy4ABDwg" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">https://youtu.be/sgHZy4ABDwg</a>

When it fails it is spectacular lol. I never asked for a giant boulder to emerge from the surface of the moon..., nor did I ask for the astronaut to dance...

I also installed an AI sound effects/music generator... it is impressive... and it is all free software!

Video was generated using Hunyuan, and yes, it has all sorts of issues, but I am still impressed.. if I ask for a more traditional scene it does a far better job, I will try to post examples.

Wordpress is getting strange, I read. Haven't talked to Robert for a long time.

Discord, or other platforms are an option. What made the HZ great was being outside the corporate platforms. That was a long time ago.

But this stuff is increasingly beyond my ken.

Towards the second point: invite people. I do, now and again, just have a read, I think you'd have fun. I know the doorman.

With your moderator powers, you can get them in.

Which is what ruined the Zone in my opinion. Registration, firstly; then that registration not working.

Perhaps to be discussed on Community?

I used CHATGPT to help me figure out what would be sufficient hardware to do the things I want to do.... it was very helpful...

Chat GPT has become extremely useful... and its all in its infancy still... I have no doubt this technology will change the world in many ways we cannot yet imagine, and many of those changes will not be for the better...

Fascist oligarchs have taken power in America at the same time technology has allowed the creation and dissemination of misinformation that is nearly impossible to distinguish from reality... This will not go well...

The motherboard I finally chose was the ASRock - TRX50 WS AMD sTR5 eATX Motherboard, which has the sTR5 socket I needed for the threadripper and 5 PCIE slots... If you want to run multiple GPU you need a CPU and motherboard that has enough PCIE lanes- I am HOPING that the next generation of Threadripper will use the same socket type so I can upgrade the CPU at least once- boy for my work it is the GPUs that matter most- My last computer had three GPU (NVIDIA 1080), the 4090 alone should outperform all 3 1080 put together by a huge margin...

For AI the VRAM on the GPU is very important- 4090 has 24Gig vram, and the 5090 will have 32gig VRAM with a huge leap forward in VRAM bandwidth

This is also the first computer I have owned where some of the chips were made using the EUVL process I worked on at Sandia National Lab way back in 2001... it took ~20 years for that Chip lithography process to overcome all the technical challenges to be used commercially- a single EUVL machine costs ~400 million dollars...
For my build:
The CPU is ~ $1300
4090 GPU is ~$1900
Motherboard is $700
a 96 gig stick of RAM is ~$550
1600Watt power supply
I went with a lot of SSD as well
Its a large expense, you can get a top end gaming computer for significantly less, I last bought a desktop maybe 8 years ago... I don't do this often ... Currently you can expect that most of the open source AI applications will take a lot of time to install and get working, they are not simply things you quickly download and use- many/most will only run in a LINUX environment, and you download the source code from GITHUB... each one will likely take a lot of learning to use.

I expect that will change rapidly with more user friendly applications coming out soon, but those will likely be costly too ... I hope to use opensource stuff as much as possible which is free but takes a significant time investment.

HOPEFULLY I will get to the point that I could make a high quality video advert for the HZ using these tools and have it sound like its narrated by Morgan Freeman ( https://github.com/WadRex/RVCompact ).... THAT will get more members! :)

What socket is used for the Threadripper. What motherboard are you using.

What did it end up costing you?

The Zone could use an update, but more importantly, it could use some new members.
