I understand the difference between correlation and causation. Nonetheless, there are degrees of correlation. This is not like saying ice cream consumption increases the murder rate. Examining consistant data from 24 studies may not be conclusive but it's a good start.

The evidence is stacking up that the drug is associated with a greater likelihood of heart problems.

While most Americans consider marijuana safe, new research published this week found that use of the drug is associated with a higher risk of stroke and heart attack, including among younger adults.

The analysis, which examined data from 24 studies and was published in the journal Heart, also found that marijuana use was associated with a twofold increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. While this data only shows a correlation and cannot prove that marijuana caused these effects, it is well-established that the drug can raise blood pressure and heart rate and alter the heart’s rhythm, said Dr. Ersilia DeFilippis, a cardiologist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. And a number of other studies have also suggested a link between the drug and cardiovascular issues...

I quit partaking a number of years ago, but the weed today is way stronger than even the good stuff from my youth. Plus a number of studies have come out in recent years linking smoking pot to dementia, and to some psychological disorders.

Still not as bad for you as booze though.

It would not be unprecedented.

During the Nixon administration, a time of anti-drug hysteria and a "war on drugs" aimed mostly at hippies, Chicanos and black folks, Attorney General John Mitchell persecuted users of marijuana, mushrooms, and the psychedelics with draconian laws and policies designed to destroy the lives and futures of American youth because of their activism in the anti Vietnam War movement. The plan was to destroy the counter-culture, and it succeeded.

About the same time, Big Pharma was aggressively marketing a group of dangerously psychoactive compounds aimed at middle-class housewives and other affluent users, drugs embraced by the medical profession as virtual cure-alls for all sorts of bogus neuroses and emotional complaints then popular among the Moral Majority.

In spite of the virulent anti-drug propaganda and policies of the Watergate Wonder, no effort was ever made to institute controls on these uppers, downers, tranquilizers, barbiturates, amphetamines and other non-recreational prescription drugs which became popular about that time. Meanwhile, the round-up and incarceration of youngsters getting high proceeded with an unprecedented ferocity. Thousands of young lives and careers destroyed in an orgy of spite and vindictiveness, while no special actions were ever taken to control the spread of the pills. "There are already laws in place to control illegal drug use."

The pattern continues today: Black crack users are severely punished with zero-tolerance jail time while white business major cocaine sniffers get fines and parole. And of course, pillbillies and prescription opiod addicts in Appalachia and Smalltown America are directed towards halfway houses, tough love and rehab programs.

Even the Stones felt compelled to comment on this peculiar American phenomenon.

Kids these days need to be numbed to handle the fact the American dream is dead.
In a conspiratorial way, I think the allowable alcohol content of beer was changed by the powers-that-be to keep the masses "dumb" to the changes that were happening.
